North Carolina U.S. House District 5: Meet the Candidates

Longtime incumbent Virginia Foxx seeks an 11th term on the US House of Representatives.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The race for the U.S. House of Representatives seat for District 5 sees a longtime incumbent matched up against a new challenger.

After 2023 redistricting, District 5 now makes up parts of Guilford, Forsyth, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Alleghany, Wilkes and Watauga Counties, among others.

Chuck Hubbard

A native of Wilkes County, Chuck Hubbard was born in Bryson City and earned a bachelor's degree from Wofford College in 1985. Hubbard's background is as a journalist.

Hubbard began work at the age of 8 at the print shop of the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, which was founded by his grandfather in 1932. After graduating from Wofford, he started working for publications in small towns across North Carolina.

In recent years, Hubbard has served on the board of Wilkes Recovery Revolution, the Wilkes Child Abuse Prevention Team and the Wilkes Prison Ministry.

According to his website, Hubbard's platform includes protecting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, expanding access to affordable healthcare and protecting abortion rights.

Virginia Foxx

Born in New York, Foxx earned a bachelor's and master's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill before earning her doctorate at UNC-Greensboro. She served as a member of the Watauga County Board of Education and as a state senator in North Carolina before she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 2004.

Foxx has won re-election nine times since then. She is currently the Chairwoman of the United States House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce and a member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. From 2013-16, she served as Secretary of the House Republican Conference.

Foxx also previously served as the Chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education.

According to her website, Foxx is running on a platform of lower taxes, maintaining family values and better securing the US-Mexico border. She is also a staunch defender of Second Amendment rights.
