NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Incumbent Richard Hudson takes on Democratic challenger Nigel Bristow and Independent Shelane Etchison in the race for North Carolina's 9th Congressional District.

After 2023 redistricting, District 9 makes up parts of Guilford and Chatham Counties, as well as all of Randolph and Alamance Counties.

Richard Hudson

The Republican candidate for the 9th district, Hudson has served as a US Representative since first being elected in 2012. A native of Charlotte, Hudson got his start in politics early by helping his grandfather's city council campaign in Roanoke Rapids. He also once served as the student body president at UNC-Charlotte.

Prior to his election, Hudson worked as the chief of staff for several members of Congress, including North Carolina representative Virginia Foxx. He was also the communications director of the North Carolina Republican Party in the 1990s.

Hudson currently serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce. He is running on a platform centered around protecting the 2nd Amendment, cutting unnecessary government spending and defending the ban on partial-birth abortions.

Nigel Bristow

The Democratic candidate for the 9th district, Bristow has a background in law enforcement. He worked for the New York Police Department for 20 years before retiring and eventually spending 10 years teaching in the New York City Public School System.

Bristow spent the better part of 13 years with the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections. He began his North Carolina law-enforcement career in Rockingham County before transferring to Anson County.

As a resident of Richmond County, Bristow has recently served on the Richmond County Local Re-Entry Council, the Community Centers Coalition of Richmond County, the Ashley Chapel Community Center Coalition and New Horizons of Richmond County.

Elements of Bristow's platform include codifying Roe v. Wade into law, raising the federal minimum wage, incentivizing builders to build more affordable housing and extending military benefits.

Shelane Etchison

Running as an Independent in this race, Etchison served over a decade in the United States military after the 9/11 terrorist attacks spurred her to join the Army after college.

Etchison is a native of central Florida, and she holds graduate degrees from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Business School. She is affiliated with the North Carolina Forward Party, which believes that "our constitutional republic is constantly being undermined and corrupted by the current two-party structure."

Etchison is running on a platform of fighting against corruption, protecting individual liberties and providing more support for veterans.
