GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro mayor Nancy Vaughn issued a warning about voter registration text scams Monday with the general election looming.
On Facebook, Vaughn shared an image of a text message she received that read: "We have you in our records as not registered to vote. Check your registration status and register at ...," followed by an unknown URL.
According to Vaughn, election officials will never send a mass text message like this to check on voter registration. If you receive one of these messages, it is best to ignore it and block the number you received it from.
Text scams related to voter registration have blown up across the country in recent weeks as the November election draws closer and closer. Similar dupes have popped up in places like Detroit, Charlotte and other major cities in battleground states.
The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election is October 11. This year's election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5.
