GREENSBORO, N.C. — We are one day out from Super Tuesday, March 5.
North Carolina is one of sixteen states holding a Super Tuesday election.
If you plan to vote there are things you need to know before you go to the polls. We posed voter last minute questions to our State Board of Elections Public Information Officer, Patrick Gannon and here's what he had to say:
What does a sample ballot look like? and How can voters get access to theirs?
Sample ballots look just like the ballot the voter will get when they vote, except they have “SAMPLE BALLOT” written on them. Sample ballots are available for every voter by using the State Board of Elections’ Voter Search tool. A voter simply can enter their name to pull up their voter record, then scroll down to the “Your Sample Ballot” section.
Is it too late to apply to be a poll watcher the day of Super Tuesday?
Official election observers are appointed by political parties, which have until noon on Monday, March 4 to submit their observer lists to the county boards of elections. This would be a question for them. Anyone has the right to watch or monitor the election outside the voting place. This activity must remain outside the buffer zone, which typically extends 50 feet from the entrance of the voting place and is clearly marked. Outside monitors must stay within the area designated for election-related activity, if provided. Outside monitors may not disrupt voting, intimidate voters, or otherwise impede access to the polls. On-site elections officials have the duty to ensure a safe and orderly voting site where voters are not obstructed. These officials are authorized to remove anyone who is disruptive. Maintenance of order at place of registration and voting. N.C.G.S. § 163-48.
What happens if voters forget to bring their voter ID?
If the voter does not show an acceptable ID, the voter may proceed to vote in one of the two following ways:
- complete an ID Exception Form and then vote with a provisional ballot, or
- vote with a provisional ballot and then return to their county board of elections office with their photo ID by the day before county canvass (March 14 for the primary). (For municipal elections in September and October, this deadline is the Monday following Election Day. For all other elections, the deadline is the second Thursday following Election Day) See here for more information: https://www.ncsbe.gov/voting/voter-id
Are there exceptions when it comes to using an expired driver's license to vote? Who falls under the exception?
Any voter may use a driver’s license that is expired for one year or less. Voters 65 and older may use an expired form of acceptable photo ID if the ID was unexpired on their 65th birthday.
The 2024 primary election is Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Polling places will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Any voter in line at their assigned polling place at 7:30 p.m. will be able to vote. Registered voters can find their polling place and sample ballot here: Voter Search.
