CNN requests federal court to handle Mark Robinson's defamation case

Robinson lost the North Carolina governor race to Josh Stein.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A recent court filing by CNN shows it wants Mark Robinson's defamation lawsuit against the cable news network to be moved from state to federal court.

CNN filed a Notice of Removal on November 15 requesting the case be moved from Wake County Superior Court to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

Robinson filed the lawsuit against CNN last month after the network released a story on its website alleging the then-candidate for North Carolina Governor made several sexually explicit and racist comments on a pornography website's message board several years ago.

Robinson also filed a defamation lawsuit against former adult video store worker Louis Love Money. Money has since filed a motion to dismiss the case, but a hearing to decide has not occurred.

On election night, Robinson was thoroughly defeated by Democrat Josh Stein in the race for North Carolina Governor. Stein's victory by 14.8 percentage points was the largest margin of victory in a North Carolina gubernatorial race since Pat McCrory beat Walter Dalton by 11.39 points in 2012.
