Newly appointed North Carolina Chief Justice Cheri Beasley spoke at a Black History Month event in Columbia over the weekend.
According to CBS affiliate WNCT, the event took place at Salem Missionary Baptist Church.
Beasley is the first African American women appointed to the NC supreme court.
She was appointed earlier this week by Governor Roy Cooper and her official swearing-in will be on March 7.
"We always hear lots of stories about national leaders but its important that we think about the ways that we are empowered in our own communities and how we can come together around issues that matter to peoples everyday lives," said Beasley.
