Have yourself a big helping of GMOs: #tellusatoday

A report from the National Academies of Science found genetically engineered crops (or GMOs, genetically modified organisms) are safe for humans and animals to consume. Facebook comments are edited for clarity, length and grammar:

Not buying this report. These corporate entities are so huge and tied to the government, they could buy any "facts" they want.

Mike Gryka

GMO food makes cultivation cheaper and increases crop yields. This is quite beneficial to people whose lives literally depend on reliable harvests.

Bobby McCarthy

Now I hope people will stop resisting the requirement to label GMOs. Even if GMOs are great for me, it should still be up to me to decide what goes in my body.

Jerome Jenkins

It’s not the GMO; it’s the pesticides the crops are doused in that make the GMO crops bad for people. So the study avoids the obvious question: Is that food less healthy to eat when it reaches your plate?

Brian Draiger

When humans manipulate, or try to manipulate, nature, bad things happen more often than not. I'm more concerned about the effects on plants, animals and insects — particularly honeybees.

Mike Sullivan

I still think it’s important to label foods that have GMOs. People have the right to know.

Cam Garside

"Non-GMO" and "organic" are the only labels I need.

— Pat McCord

GMOs all by themselves shouldn't worry anybody that much. What should worry people are the fertilizers and some of the pesticides used.

We asked our followers their thoughts on scientists saying GMOs are safe to eat. Comments from Twitter are edited for clarity and grammar:

Anyone who has the opportunity should be growing some of their own food.

@HDblurredvision

Just label food and let the consumer decide for themselves.

@ChileRick

There hasn’t been enough time spent studying GMO consumption to know long-term side effects.

@spinninggorilla

It's up to individuals if they want to consume food with GMOs.

@Pumpkinlethics

Only a fool would believe they are safe. All food should be organic and GMO free.

@GingerHifko

GMOs range from processed foods to seedless watermelons. People are misinformed.

@mmafootball81

Our most vulnerable population lacks the resources to avoid unforeseen consequences from the consumption of GMOs.
