SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A Surry County man turned a $2 lottery ticket into nearly $300,000 recently.

According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, Jerry Haire Jr. of Dobson purchased the Lucky for Life ticket at the Quality Mart on River Ridge Drive in Winston-Salem. The odds of winning were 1 in 1.8 million.

Haire Jr. had a choice of taking $25,000 a year for the rest of his life or a $390,000 lump sum. He took the latter, and after tax withholdings, he was able to bring home $278,871 in total.

According to the state lottery, Lucky for Life is "one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through a retail location or online play."
