Yard waste collection bins to be distributed soon

The City of Greensboro said the new bins will be used for the new loose-leaf collection program.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — New yard waste collection bins will soon be delivered to homes in Greensboro. The first round of bins will be going out next Monday.

They'll be used for the new loose-leaf collection program.

The city recently announced it would no longer accept yard waste in plastic bags. The city said the old system was inefficient and cost too much money.

How to Use Your Yard Waste Container

  • Use for leaves, branches, and grass clippings only. DO NOT place plastic bags, animal waste, food, plant pots, rocks, soil, mulch, dirt, or other items in the yard waste container.
  • Close the lid to the container so no rain gets inside.
  • Place the container at your curb on your weekly garbage collection day.
  • Have more yard waste than can fit in the container? Put it in paper yard waste bags or bundles tied with twine. For safety reasons, bags or bundles must be shorter than 5 feet long and weigh less than 50 pounds.
  • Limit of 10 bags/bundles per week from February to October.
  • Limit of 15 bags/bundles per week from November to January.
  • Personal cans may be used for extra waste only through June 30.
  • Residents may purchase one additional yard waste container for $65. To buy your extra container, call the City Contact Center at 336-373-CITY.

The new yard waste container is part of a more significant shift in yard waste rules this year. Visit www.greensboro-nc.gov/YardWaste2024 for more details.
