GREENSBORO, N.C. — Yanceyville Road is closed between Kalon Drive and Archergate Road for a death investigation, Greensboro police said. GPD said it got a call for service around 12:23 p.m. near Lake Townsend.
Drivers should find a different route and use caution if traveling in the area. The Greensboro Police Department suggests taking North Chuch Street as an alternative.
A WFMY News 2 photographer was in the area when the call for service was placed. He spoke to the person who made the call — 18-year-old Sean Murphy — who said he discovered a dead body in the water while fishing on a boat in Lake Townsend.
"I came down probably two-thirds down the rocks and I saw a guy laying there and I was shocked," Murphy said. "I didn't know what to do. I yelled at him. I tried to get his attention because I didn't know if he was under the influence of something or passed out and I waited five minutes and tried to figure out what to do and I called my dad. I asked him what to do and he came and he took a look at it to make sure the guy was not under the influence or anything. He wasn't, so we called the cops and then they came and declared him passed away."
Murphy told WFMY News 2 that police said they found a shell casing at the scene when they arrived.
Police have not released the name of the person found dead or the cause of their death. The area of Yanceyville has been completely blocked off as officials carry out their investigation.
