2 WSSU students die within a month, school confirms

"It is time again for us to pull together and support one another," Interim Chancellor Anthony Graham shared.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Two students died within a month of each other at Winston-Salem State University, university officials confirm.

Here is what we know about the students that have passed.

Jordan Staton

Jordan Malik Staton, 19, died from a medical condition on Sept. 29.

Staton was a sophomore psychology major at WSSU. He was from Wadesboro.

Staton was described to be a passionate dancer with a fearless and inspiring spirit. Close friends said Staton was brave and helped them become more comfortable in their skin.

On Sept. 27, Staton collapsed while practicing with the Epiphany Modeling Troupe. He died two days later.

WSSU said he had a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), where the heart muscle becomes thickened, making it harder to pump blood, and often goes undiagnosed because it does not present many symptoms.

WSSU Chancellor Dr. Anthony Graham said in a statement that “the sudden loss of Jordan has left our WSSU family in shock and sorrow. We will forever cherish the impact he had on WSSU and those who knew him. We extend our sincere thoughts of comfort and peace to Jordan’s family, friends, and classmates during this difficult time.”

His funeral was on Oct. 7. A prayer vigil was held on the WSSU campus on Oct. 12.

Payton Ogletree

WSSU announced the death of Payton Ogletree on Oct. 22.

Details related to the death of Ogletree are unknown at the time of reporting, but WSSU said Ogletree died of natural causes. No foul play is suspected.

"It is time again for us to pull together and support one another," wrote Interim Chancellor Anthony Graham.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

For students who are struggling, WSSU encouraged students to visit or make an appointment with the Counseling Center.
