WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A Winston-Salem State student earned top honors at a national conference.
WSSU officials told WFMY News 2 Olivia Franklin, a biology major, won first place in the Undergraduate Biological Sciences Poster Presentation category at the recent 2014 Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
Franklin's presentation was entitled "Bioinformatic Analysis of Preseilin-2." She was one of five WSSU students who participated in the conference sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is a participant in WSSU's NSF Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP).
Other students that participated included Jessica Clark, biology major, KaDesia Hawkins, chemistry, Joshua Recore, mathematics, and Jori Strack, chemistry. Franklin, Clark, Hawkins and Recore received all-expense paid travel awards from the AAAS and Strack was supported by a WSSU NSF Targeted Infusion Project grant.
The conference is designed to help undergraduate and graduate students enhance their science communication skills and better understand how to prepare for science careers in a global workforce.
In addition to presentations, officials say there were workshops on strategies for succeeding in graduate programs, career preparation and understanding STEM careers in the context of international research and education.
