One dead after car crashes into back of Winston-Salem police car on US-52

The woman was in the backseat of the car when it crashed into the police car on the highway.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Mount Airy woman died in a crash involving a Winston-Salem police car on Sunday.

It happened on US-52 South near mile marker 109 around 10 p.m.

Highway Patrol said a Winston-Salem police car was blocking the left lane of travel for a disabled car in the roadway.

Troopers said a Honda Accord failed to slow down and crashed into the back of the police car.

The right rear passenger in the Honda, a 40-year-old woman from Mount Airy, died from her injuries.

Three more people were inside the car, including a 4-year-old girl. They all had non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said the officer in the WSPD patrol car had minor injuries.
