Woman dies after tree falls on home in Rockingham County during Tropical Storm Debby

The woman's daughter said she spoke to her mom Wednesday night but was worried about her during Thursday's storm.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A Rockingham County woman was pronounced dead at her home on Clearwater Lane on Thursday night following a long day of heavy winds from Tropical Storm Debby.

Williamsburg Fire Department officials who responded to the scene said an oak tree fell onto the woman's mobile home while she was in the bathroom, killing her. The victim was identified as 78-year-old Hilda Windsor Jones. Deputies said she lived alone.

This comes after a tornado warning was issued for Rockingham County until 7 p.m. The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office received no reports of damage or injury following the alert -- until they received a call from the victim's daughter.

The woman's daughter said she spoke to her mom Wednesday night but was worried about her during Thursday's storm.

The daughter then called her mom's neighbor to check on her. The neighbor noticed a tree had fallen on the house.

This is the second death connected to Tropical Storm Debby in North Carolina. Someone died when a tornado ripped through their home in Wilson County, east of Raleigh, early Thursday morning.
