Incident during Winston-Salem State Homecoming Parade leaves pedestrians injured

Two vehicles and five pedestrians were involved in the accident.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — An accident involving two vehicles and five pedestrians led to injuries at the Winston-Salem State Homecoming Parade on Saturday morning, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

At approximately 11 a.m., officers who were working the parade responded to a car accident involving pedestrians. According to a press release, both vehicles and all five pedestrians were participants in the parade.

Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that Vehicle 1, driven by 62-year-old Jerry Milton Haynie, stopped to let the parade advance. Then, "for reasons currently under investigation," Vehicle 1 began to move unexpectedly and collided with the pedestrians and a second vehicle.

Injured pedestrians were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither Haynie nor the driver of the second vehicle were injured.

The Winston-Salem Police Department said the incident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
