Winston-Salem, NC-- A call for police backup to a Winston-Salem nightclub ended in an officer's death.
Sgt. Howard Plouffwith the Winston-Salem Police Department was killed on February 23, 2007. Around 2:00am, Sgt. Plouff responded to the Red Rooster Nightclub to help the deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Plouff was fatally shot outside a nightclub whilehelping deputies disperse a crowd of people fighting.Four deputies were working off-duty security at a local nightclub when a fight broke out during a private party.
The fighting moved outside the club and several shots were fired, one of which struck Sgt. Plouff. He was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where he died hours later.
Sergeant Howard Plouff was a 17-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Keith Carter was arrested and charged about two weeks later. In March 2010, Carter was convicted and sentenced to 21 years in a NC Prison.
