Winston-Salem Officer Injured While Serving Warrant

The officer tried to serve the suspect with a warrant when they drove off. At some point, the officer was knocked to the ground.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A Winston-Salem police officer was assaulted when he was serving a warrant Thursday according to police.

Officers tried to serve Zachary Marshall Lynn with a warrant when they located his car in a parking lot on Broad Street.

Police say Lynn put his vehicle in reverse when officers approached him. According to a release, Lynn backed into the car being driven by Investigator M.D. Griffith. Investigator Griffith's vehicle was pushed backward for several feet and he was pinned between the driver's door and the pavement.

Police say Detective B.W. Hatcher saw his fellow officer pinned down, and fired his handgun twice at Lynn. The vehicle was struck, but Mr. Lynn was not injured. Lynn sped out of the parking lot and led officers on a chase.

Detective Hatcher fired his weapon at the suspect, hitting his vehicle. The suspect was not injured. 

The chase lasted for about a mile before coming to the Speedway parking lot at 1425 Silas Creek Parkway. Lynn crashed into a telephone pole and was taken into custody.

Investigator Griffith was treated at the hospital for abrasions and contusions from being drug under the vehicle door. He has been released.

Detective Hatcher was not injured. He was placed on administrative duty while the investigation is completed. Hatcher is an 18 year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Lynn's warrants included breaking and entering a motor vehicle and attempted larceny of a vehicle.

Zachary Marshall Lynn was arrested Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest, Felony Hit and Run Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Misdemeanor Hit and Run with Property Damage, Driving While License Revoked, Careless and Reckless Driving, and Failure to Stop at a Duly Erected Stop Sign.
