Area clear after reported hazardous material found prompting evacuations in Winston-Salem, police say

Winston-Salem police said the area was thoroughly investigated and there is no further danger to the community.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —

UPDATE:

Winston-Salem police said the HDU has secured the scene and residents can use the normal traffic patterns in the area of Mary Dee Lane and Riley Forest Drive. 

The area was thoroughly investigated an unknown substance in the home. At this time, there is no further danger to the community. 

This investigation remains ongoing. 

PREVIOUS REPORT:

Winston-Salem police are responding to a mental health situation on the 2100 Block of Mary Dee Lane Friday afternoon. 

During further investigation, officers said they found material suspected to be hazardous inside the home. At this time, residents nearby are to evacuate. 

The Hazardous Devices Unite has been contacted. 

For those that have not been contacted to leave by law enforcement, Winston-Salem police are asking residents to shelter in place. 

There is a police presence on Mary Dee Lane and in the area of Riley Forest Drive. Both are dead-end streets, so drivers are to continue onto Swaim Road and avoid the area if possible.
