Fire at apartment complex in Winston-Salem, "approximately 25" people displaced

The fire department says the cause of the fire will most likely be ruled as undetermined.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Over two dozen Winston-Salem residents are trying to figure out their next move following a devastating fire that started Sunday night.

Fire crews were hard at work putting out the large residential fire that happened within an apartment complex called Brandemere Apartment Homes.

The Winston-Salem Fire Department received word of the fire shortly before 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening. The department's X account posted photos and a video showing crews working to put out a massive blaze. According to the W-S Fire Department, no one was injured, but approximately 25 residents have been displaced.

"I got a phone call from one of my neighbors," resident Angelica Hauser told WFMY News 2. "They said your side of the building is on fire. So the only thing I thought about was getting my kids out of there. We left with just what we had on them, just the clothes on their backs."

Hauser said she is waiting to hear back from her insurance company, the Red Cross and the apartment complex where the fire occurred. Until then, she is counting her blessings, thankful her neighbor called when they did.

Officials say over 60 firefighters came out to fight the flames at the 5100 Block of Merehunt Court. The cause of the fire, the fire department said, may not be determined because of the severe damage including caved in roofs, collapsed floors and fallen walls.

"It's safe to say we will not know what caused it just due to the amount of damage that was caused. The Fire Marshal's office is just going to rule it undetermined because so much of it was just destroyed in the fire,"   Winston-Salem Fire Assistant Chief Andrew Gray told WFMY News 2

Here's a look the scene Monday.

While WFMY News 2 was at the scene, firefighters helped residents collect belongings that could be salvaged. Those items included things like medication and personal belongings.
