WILSON COUNTY, N.C. — A tornado that blew through Wilson County on Thursday has now been categorized as an EF-3, according to the National Weather Service.
The agency said the tornado carried winds moving at 140 mph, earning it an EF-3 rank on the Enhanced Fujita scale.
The tornado tore the roof off Springfield Middle School and ripped through homes. One man was killed as the tornado collapsed his home.
Officials in Wilson County said the man was found dead inside the home early Thursday morning.
WNCN reports that officials believe he was the homeowner.
Wilson County Government officials said in a social post that four homes had structural damage from the storm.
Many counties in central and eastern North Carolina are under tornado watches on Thursday as they bear the brunt of Debby's high winds.
