GREENSBORO, N.C. — We heard your concerns about an uptick of roadkill throughout the Triad.
WFMY News 2 reached out to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and Alliance Insurance to find out what's going on.
NC Wildlife Officer Brett Shreve patrols Guilford County. He said October and November is mating season for white tail deer. He added that there is an increased presence of bears throughout the state.
If drivers see wildlife they should:
- Adjust speed, drive slow
- Do not interact with the animals (in person or with your vehicle)
- Call NCWRC at 1-800-662-7137
"We get calls pretty frequently about roadkill deer. Basically, the bucks are chasing the doe's," Officer Shreve explained, "Distracted driving is the most common reason why people are hitting deer. If you see one there's likely going to be more following behind."
If you cannot slow down in time, insurance experts explain it's best to hit the wildlife with your vehicle. Christopher Cook is the owner of Alliance Insurance Services he told us full coverage comprehensive auto insurance covers the bill.
"When it comes to the fact that you've got a surprise and a deer is right in front of you. What I do not want you to do is swerve," Cook warned, "Our total loss accidents, our fatalities occur when folks swerve to avoid things at a high speed."
He said it is more common on highways and backroads.
Drivers are advised to call the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission at 1-800-662-7137 if you have any questions or need help concerning wildlife.
