WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Freezing temperatures will befall Winston-Salem on Friday, Nov. 29, causing the city to enact a White Flag night.

White Flag responses occur when overnight temperatures are expected to sit below 32° with precipitation.

When the clock strikes 8 p.m., anyone in the unhoused community can access a warming center at The Dwelling in Winston-Salem.

While it's not a sleeping shelter, The Dwelling will provide a warm spot away from the cold. If you're planning on bringing animals, make sure they are leashed or crated while at the warming center.

You can find The Dwelling at 502 N. Broad Street, Winston-Salem, NC.

While Friday is an emergency White Flag night, The Dwelling is mere days away from opening nightly for the winter season.

Starting Dec. 1 until Feb. 28, The Dwelling will be welcoming people inside from the harsh cold from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly. The Dwelling will offer hot drinks, soup and respite from the cold, according to their website.

St. Timothy's Episcopal Church will also offer a nightly warming/sleeping shelter to up to 20 women from Dec. 1 to Feb. 28. Dinner will be provided.

Lastly, a mom and kids shelter will be available at the Calvary Moravian Church from Jan. 1 to Feb. 28 for up to 20 guests nightly. Moms and kiddos will be able to get dinner and some sleep. This shelter can be accessed by calling 211.
