What Would You Do If You Found $7 Million? Guilford County Schools Is Putting It Towards Renovations

Several Guilford County Schools construction projects came in under budget. This gives GCS an opportunity to spend it on six different schools.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Guilford County School board recommended moving $7,113,803 of leftover money into a Career and Technical Education academy budget.

Six schools would use this money to get up to date Career and Technical Education (CTE) academies.

This is welcoming news after a report the school system received in February saying a lot of buildings need improvement. The consulting company made recommendations on how to fix things up and better use space, including redistricting, renovations and a nearly $1.5 billion budget to get it all done.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. - On Thursday, MGT Consulting Group presented their findings to Guilford County Schools leaders after conducting roughly a year-long assessment of the district's facilities. The main takeaways are that a lot of buildings need improvement and the company made recommendations on how to fix things up and better use space, including redistricting, renovations and a nearly $1.5 billion budget to get it all done.

The schools that would get immediate attention are: The Academy at Smith, Kearns Academy, Northeast High School, Smith High School, Southeast High School, and Western High School.

The money would be used to either renovate existing CTE spaces, or create new ones.

For example at Smith High School, they would build a new CTE building, but at Kearns Academy they would just renovate existing classrooms.

CTE renovations would allow classrooms like an Artificial Intelligence classroom, or a Cyber Security classroom to exist.
