COROLLA, N.C. (WNCN) - A large rusty object that washed up at the Outer Banks earlier this year is still a mystery.
The massive hunk of cylindrical metal has what appears to be several fins jutting from the sides.
Video from the Outer Banks Voice also indicated there is a light on a short pole attached to the top of the object, which is at Currituck milepost 3.5 at Pine Island.
The small light actually works at night and appears to be powered by a small solar cell, the newspaper reported.
Some serious responders guessed it was a shoal marker or navigation aid.
Humorous commenters asked if it had a parking pass for the beach and another said it was "the conning tower of a Russian Class Z nuclear sub."
Strange things have washed up at the Outer Banks before, including large buoys and training mines.
In November 2017, a large curved piece of debris on the beach was from a Space X rocket.
