More than 100,000 pounds of supplies to be sent to western NC, state National Guard says

The relief efforts come as the state recovers from the deadly storm that claimed dozens of lives.

The North Carolina Air National Guard is set to send over 100,000 pounds of supplies from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to western North Carolina following Helene's destruction over the weekend, according to a post.

In the storm's aftermath, soldiers from the North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) have been deployed to cities in the western part of the state, including Monroe and Asheville, to render emergency aid to those in need.

So far, the NCNG has delivered 306 pallets of water and 230 pallets of food since the storm began.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper's office announced today 34 storm-related deaths have been confirmed in the state, with dozens of residents reported missing.

More than 500 people have been rescued, with the NC National Guard having saved 422 of them. 42 people were seriously injured; four were infants, according to a release from the governor's office.

64 animals were also rescued.
