GREENSBORO, N.C. — A main water break in Greensboro has left six businesses without service and inconvenienced drivers along highly traveled Green Valley Road.
Crews have closed the eastbound lanes of Green Valley Road between Benjamin Parkway and Northline Avenue as they make repairs. The location is near Friendly Shopping Center.
City officials said the O'Henry Hotel, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and a gas station are some of the businesses whose water is currently turned off.
Green Valley Grill is also closed until Tuesday at 11 a.m., but the business said it could be fixed sooner. They're also suggesting everyone visit Prints Works Bistro in the meantime.
The water break also forced Circle K to tie off their bathrooms.
"Just asking the customers not to use the facilities until that we're completely sure that it's taken care of," said associate Tammy Heath.
City crews are currently repairing the main water break. While the city doesn't know exactly what caused this particular pipe to burst, it said it most likely has to do with cold temperatures.
"The cold weather is kind of like a stress test for the water system. Any weaknesses that are out there add additional stress to the pipes. And it'll find those weaknesses and break. These brakes are going to happen at some point it's just the cold weather accelerates that," said water resources operations manager, Adam Conn.
Conn said the water should be turned back on by 9:00 p.m. Monday. However, crews will still be in the area working to make road repairs in the coming days.
The city encourages drivers to find an alternative route. If drivers must travel through the area, they're asked to adhere to "slow" signs and drive the speed limit.
If residents notice discoloration or cloudy water coming from your tap after the repairs, run cold water for a few minutes through a faucet without an aerator, such as the outside spigot or bathtub, until clear.
