GREENSBORO, N.C. — 2 Wants To Know is adding something else to your back-to-school checklist, vaccines. If your student is not up to date, your kid could be sent home.
"Every kid is given a 30-day grace period if they don't get those immunizations and health assessments complete or at least the immunizations in process. On day 31 by law, the principles are to exclude them from school until they have those health assessments or until they have those immunization records turned in," said Brooke Hamby, Public Health Nursing Supervisor, School Health, Forsyth Co.
Most of us think of elementary-aged students needing the most vaccines, but every age group has requirements.
K-12th Grade:
5 Dtap doses
4 Polio doses
2 MMR doses
3 Hepatitis B doses
K-9th Grade:
2 doses of Varicella
10th-12th Grade:
1 dose of Varicella
7th-11th Grade:
1 dose of Tdap (after the 10th birthday)
1 dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine
12th Grade:
2 doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine
"Seventh and 12th graders tend to fall off the radar just a little bit. You know, when a child is born, they go to the doctor regularly, get shots regularly. But then once they get into kindergarten, you kind of don't need any required shots until they get to seventh grade," said Hamby.
If your student is new to any school system in North Carolina, you need to submit a health assessment and transmittal form.
