UVA Students Arrested In Living Wage Protest

Students want campus workers to earn more money.

Charlottesville, VA -- Seventeen student protesters seeking a "living wage" for the lowest-paid workers at the University of Virginia have been arrested. Student activist Amy Kniss says the protesters were taken into custody at Madison Hall Saturday and taken to the city jail to be booked on trespassing charges. It was the fourth day of a sit-in at the administration building. Earlier, university president John Casteen met with the protesters and let supporters outside the building pass food to those inside. However, the activists report on their Web site that the food was withheld and then thrown out after the arrests. The protesters want pay increases to $10.72 an hour for about 800 to 1,00 UVA workers who make about a dollar less than what the activists consider a living wage.
