RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Administration announced they will be lowering United States and NC flags to half-staff in honor of Greensboro police Sergeant Philip Dale Nix.

The flags will be flown at half-staff from Tuesday, Jan. 2 until sunset on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

On Dec. 30, Sergeant Philip Dale Nix was off-duty Saturday afternoon when he saw a crime in progress at the Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road west of Greensboro. He tried to stop it and was shot. Coincidently, another off-duty officer and a Guilford County paramedic were on the scene. They rushed to help Sgt. Nix, but he later died at the hospital.

He was with the Greensboro Police Department since 2001.

“Our prayers are with the Greensboro police and family and friends. I’m grateful to those working to bring justice in this tragic act of violence," said Gov. Cooper in a statement.

The NC DOA encouraged Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions to participate.
