UNC cancels remaining classes Tuesday amid pro-Palestine demonstrations

Protestors were seen bringing down the American flag on campus Tuesday and replacing it with a Palestinian flag.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — UNC-Chapel Hill canceled classes for the remainder of Tuesday in the wake of pro-Palestine demonstrations happening on campus. The group is protesting Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

This comes after several demonstrators were arrested early Tuesday morning as police cleared out the encampment.

Protesters were also seen bringing down the American flag and replacing it with a Palestinian flag. As of late Tuesday afternoon, the Palestinian flag had been taken down.

The group is calling on UNC to cut any financial ties to Israel. Protestors have said they will stay in their encampment until the university meets their demands.

UNC's interim chancellor and provost shared a message following the arrests. It reads in part:

"We were disappointed that we had to take action this morning regarding protestors, including many who are not members of the Carolina community, who violated state law and University policies that provide for peaceful demonstration. Into the weekend, our University maintained a healthy and constructive dialogue with students and others who came to our campus to make their voices heard...that changed Sunday evening when protestors backtracked on their commitment to comply with these policies."
