Ukrainian teen to graduate from Southeast High after being relocated to Greensboro

She was sent to live with family in Greensboro a month after Russia invaded Ukraine.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Students from Southeast High School will be moving their tassels from right to left on Saturday, June 8.

Most student's parents will be in the stands to cheer them on as they enter the next stage of their lives.

But for Kseniia Botezat, her parents are halfway across the world in her home country: Ukraine.

After Botezat walks across the stage, she'll be FaceTiming her parents about the experience in Greensboro while her parents endure an ongoing war.

In March 2022, about a month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Botezat was sent to live with her aunt and paternal grandparents to keep her safe.

She hoped she would be back in six months, but unfortunately, that did not happen.

While in America, she has finished her high school career at Southeast Guilford High School. She was even elected homecoming queen in the fall of 2023.

Over the summer, Botezat will be flying home to spend two months with her family. But, she will be back in the fall to start her freshman year at UNC-Greensboro to study nursing.
