High Point cold case | Family still looking for answers

It's been two years since High Point man, John Boone was shot to death and left on the side of the road off Lakewood Drive.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — It's been two years since High Point man, John Boone, was shot to death and left on the side of the road.

High Point Police are still working to find answers and make an arrest in this case.

One can only imagine how the family of John Boone is feeling now, two years after their loved one was killed.

Boone's mother, Diane Peguese, told WFMY that Boone was treated like his life didn't matter once he was killed and left on the side of the road. She wants answers.

Boone's body was found by police on January 26th, 2022 at the intersection of Lakewood Drive and Futrelle Drive.

Investigators as well as Boone's family say he was well-known across the community.

His mother explained, "He would cut grass all throughout the community, and they would also give him a stipend pay, and that’s why the community, and I mean the community, is highly upset.”

Detective Dan Sellers is over this cold case.

He told WFMY that he's learned much about Boone since the start of the investigation.

"I learned that he was well-known. He was a sort of a transient guy, he approached people quite often. Walked around town, and he had his struggles, but he was never out to harm anyone," Detective Sellers explained.

Peguese adopted Boone when he was 17-years-old. Boone grew up deaf and nonverbal, and his mother said he had some struggles in life.

When Peguese adopted Boone, Archie Lynch became his mentor and interpreter.

Lynch spent over 30 years with John saying, "John was always independent-minded. He was always macho man, but with his deafness people just didn’t understand him."

Boone's body was found less than 10 minutes from his mother's home in High Point.

Detective Sellers said Boone was last seen on multiple surveillance videos. Here is a timeline of sightings:

Though it has been two years since Boone's body was found, Detective Sellers said the push for an arrest in this case never stopped.

"We haven’t given up, we are going to keep working it as long as we can, and we are not done,” Detective Sellers.

Peguese just wants closure in her son's case.

She said, "I want to say to the viewers out there, anybody that’s a mother, and if you have a friend, and if you knew John, please call the detectives. Give us some information, help us to get the right for John Boone to be vindicated.”

In 2022, there were 15 homicides in High Point. Three of those cases (including this one) are still open and all are being actively investigated.

Crime Stoppers of High Point recently received a donation of $800 to put toward the reward for information in this case.

Now, someone could earn up to $5,800 for tips leading to an arrest.
