NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Tropical Storm Debby has understandably shifted the plans of North Carolinians, but for two families, the impact is even greater.
Beach time has turned into screen time for the Currys of High Point.
“We were able to go to the beach for a couple days and we took the kids out on the water but outside of that, we’ve just been hanging around the condo.”
Aaron and Tanya Curry had big plans for their 13th anniversary trip with the extended family, but Debby had other plans.
“We had plans to go to a nice restaurant and catch a movie but the movie theaters were closed," Tanya said.
One of the Curry's sons said he was sad that he wouldn't be able to make it to the beach. He wanted to see the waves.
“It’s been difficult but they understand, they’re at an age where they understand that safety is important, safety is first so we have to make sure that if we go out to the beach that we’re safe," Tanya said. "But we can’t go right now because of the weather."
The family was happy they were able to get a few days on the sand – if only it lasted a bit longer.
“I just wish the weather was a little bit better for them but we have each other so we’re making the best of it," Tanya finished,
Across the coast, another family was grappling with a change in their summer plans.
It’d been a beach trip unlike any other for the Payne family of Greensboro.
“First two days we were hanging out at the beach then the weather started to deteriorate so we went to the movies to try to make the best of things," said a member of the family. "It took away a little bit of our suntan but hopefully Friday or Saturday we get a little better weather out of it.”
Debby has certainly impacted families up and down the Carolina coast. With double red flags along the grand strand, swimming isn’t an option. But neither was canceling.
“My wife was debating it a little bit, but I'm a bit of a weather fanatic so I was a little curious of how the weather was going to be. It hasn’t been too bad so fortunately, we’ve been able to stick it out," he said.
Not all is lost – they’ve found plenty of shark teeth among the rough surf. Plus, there are still a couple of days remaining on the family trip. They’re optimistic the weather will improve.
“Hopefully we can get back out on the beach for a few days after this is over, I think that’ll be fun. Or we’ll just be in the room and try to make the best of it while we can.”
