Triad restaurants lend helping hand to Helene victims in western North Carolina

Several restaurants in the triad are sending supplies and food to people in western North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The devastation in western North Carolina is motivating people across the Triad to lend a hand. Dozens of groups and businesses are collecting donations to send to areas in need.

Several Triad restaurants are sending supplies and food across western North Carolina.

Homes are destroyed, roads washed out, and businesses are flooded by several feet of water, leaving people stranded and hungry. These dire conditions are inspiring many Triad restaurants to help.

For the past week, Frady’s in High Point has been collecting supplies and delivering them to several western towns in need. Trucks and trailers full of bottled water, diapers, and paper towels are headed to families now living in Pisgah High School in Asheville after their homes were destroyed by the storm.

"Tears of joy were coming out of people's faces," said Eric Frady, who owns Frady’s Taphouse and Eatery. "There’s one man that just stood there and clapped, crying at what was being done for them. So, like Zack said, we’re blessing people, but in turn, it’s really heartwarming to be able to help."

"Everybody's in high spirits, you know, everybody's OK, which is the most important thing," Zack Butler added. "So being able to go down there and help people out and, and do something that makes you feel good is really, it's a blessing and it's a great feeling."

Taco Bros and Sliders Food Truck plan to park in several mountain towns, handing out free food. They’re bringing hot meals to hard-hit areas like Spruce Pine, Bakersville, and more.

"We’re gonna load up this truck. It’s a big truck," said Gary Rallo, who, along with his wife and brother owns Taco Bros food truck. "So hopefully we can serve close to 700 meals. We’re just gonna open our window. It’s gonna be a limited menu so we can cook fast ... Obviously the food is something that people need and we say, 'hey, we, we have a truck, we have food, let's do it.'"

The owners of Sliders Food Truck say customers and suppliers, like Ogburn Meat Market, are rallying behind them to make this effort possible.

"One of them gave us way over 100 pounds of chicken breasts," said Earl Edwards, owner of Sliders Food Truck. "Another gave us sausage, country ham, and 60 pounds of hamburger on top of what he’s given us."

"I got goosebumps now, just thinking about doing this for people. I want to help, we want to help," added Karen Edwards.
