Triad Rape Crisis Centers Receive Much Needed Money

Although centers have been reimbursed, if the government shutdown lasts until March 1st, problems could arise once again.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — In the midst of the government shutdown, a bit of good news.

Triad Rape Crisis Centers are getting more money.

For weeks, centers were told they would not be getting reimbursed by the Department of Justice.

That meant centers were at risk of closing, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault wouldn't get the help they need.

The Randolph County Family Crisis Center was at risk of losing $40,000 because of the shutdown.

Rachna Singh, a domestic violence survivor from Asheboro, is grateful more women like her will be able to get out of their abusive situations.

Singh recounted to WFMY News 2 the years of abuse at the hands of her husband.

"He is hitting me in front of the kids and sometimes he hits the kids too," she said.

They were married for 14 years, but she says problems started at week one.

Singh thought things would change when they had kids, but that never happened. She says the abuse continued until she couldn't take it anymore.

She remembers the day she called police-- October 25th, 2017.

"I wasted my 14 years just saying that maybe he's going [to be] good, gonna [be] good but no," she said.

Police directed her to the Randolph County Family Crisis Center. Their domestic violence shelter kept Singh and her two kids safe.

"They help me for everything like money, like finding my job, everything," she said.

The government shutdown almost put a hold on critical services offered by crisis centers, not only in Randolph county but all across the country.

Singh says getting help was a matter of life or death and hopes no center will have to turn anyone away.

"If they are not for me over there, maybe I'm not here. . .  I'm just saying that they are my angels the guardian angels."

Crisis centers are funded for now, but if the shutdown continues past March 1st, concerns could start back up again.
