LIBERTY, N.C. — Toyota's footprint is growing in the Triad. A Toyota subsidiary is moving into a large vacant building in Liberty. It will create 41 jobs.
Toyota Tsusho America will serve as an offsite warehouse to support the Toyota battery plant that is under construction at the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite.
The warehouse has been empty for more than 20 years. Another company planned to move in decades ago, but that didn't happen, so the space has never been used.
"The building was built as part of the industrial park in 2001 - no one has ever occupied the building," Liberty Town Manager Scott Kidd explained. "It still had dirt floors as of six months ago."
The Town of Liberty was awarded a $325,000 grant to renovate the space and get it ready for workers.
The warehouse project is projected to exceed $7 million.
It's expected to open by 2025 - when battery manufacturing is set to start.
