Toyota Battery Plant hires 900, thousands more to come

Stanton said the site is like a college campus. As each building goes up, they will work to fill the needs and the hiring sprees will pick up.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Toyota is making headway at the Greensboro-Randolph Mega site.

Toyota Human Resources Senior Manager, Tim Stanton, said more than 900 people are now working for the group, with thousands more expected to fill the open spots in the next few years.

"Over time, we will have over 5000 positions to fill so we have a long way to go but that means there's great opportunities for many people to come," said Stanton. "We are hiring production workers. We're hiring logistics workers. We're hiring quality workers. We're also hiring specialty roles and engineering and accounting. There's a lot of different opportunities given people's different interests."

Stanton said the community partnership helps tremendously in that process.

Several Guilford County School graduates this year told us they plan to work for Toyota.

NC Works is stepping in to find local workers and there are plans to hold another hiring event in Liberty, in July.

Stanton said the site is like a college campus.

As each building goes up, they will work to fill the needs and the hiring sprees will pick up.

"Our campus in Liberty, North Carolina is like a college campus," he said. "We will have multiple manufacturing buildings. Each one will be stood up every six months to a year so that means that our hiring needs will continue for the foreseeable future. We will be hiring hundreds of people each year to meet those needs and so there’s gonna be opportunities for people to come in the future."

Work is already being done on the site.

The current employees are working on the battery prototypes.

"We literally have hundreds of people right now working on our prototype batteries in our very first building so we have opened our first building for prototype production," said Stanton. "They'll be doing that prototype work throughout the balance of this year."

Stanton said they are on track for production manufacturing in the first quarter of next year.

If you remember, this is a 14 billion-dollar investment.

Just this last week, Toyota announced Green Metals Inc. will set up shop on campus, taking electric vehicle battery waste, and processing it for off-site recycling.
