Many children and parents are counting down to Back-To-School day. A majority of students in the Triad will grab their backpacks and head to class on August 27th. Back-To-School also means the return of school buses to the roads.
Many school bus drivers will be on the roads for the first time and so will some of the students riding in them. Using and sharing the road with school buses also comes with several responsibilities to ensure safety.
Here are some key things to keep in mind:
SIGN UP: If you intend to have your children use the school bus to get to and from school, make sure you've signed them up properly. Check that you have listed your address correctly or if it needs to be updated.
BE INFORMED: Know the School Bus number, the times and location for Pick-up and drop-off. Know the name of the Bus Driver and the aid where applicable and who To call if the bus doesn't show Up. It is also wise to have a backup plan to get your child to school just in case they miss the bus. Know where to get information about changes when inclement weather occurs.
SAFETY AND ETIQUETTE: It's important to know and emphasize traffic safety and school bus rules. Teach your child not to dart out into traffic, or disobey instructions from crossing guards and school bus drivers which are related to using the school bus.
BE PATIENT: Lots of new drivers are learning new routes so be courteous. Whether you are a parent preparing kids for school or a commuter heading to work, you should plan ahead and give your self-time. Head out early so you are not rushed. School Buses have to go slower on some roads and will make frequent stops. This means there will be more slow-go or traffic delays at many points in the morning and late afternoon.
OBEY THE LAW: Stop for the flashing lights and when the stop arm of the school bus is extended. Improperly passing a school bus, ignoring school crossing signs and speeding in school zones are all major offenses.
Remember, safety is the number one priority. If you have questions or concerns about how to use the school bus service, consult your school district's guidebook or the transportation department directly. If you need clarity on how to share the roads with School Buses, check out the NC DMV Driver's Handbook for more information.
