Thousands flock downtown for Greensboro Pride Festival

The event was put on by Alternative Resources of the Triad.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The unseasonably warm temperatures did little to disrupt the festivities in downtown Greensboro on Sunday, as thousands of people attended the Greensboro Pride Festival.

The Pride Festival is put on annually by Alternative Resources of the Triad (ART), a nonprofit organization that is 100% volunteer operated, according to the event's website.

"You're accepted everywhere," said attendee Savannah Kennedy. "And that doesn't happen if you're walking down like downtown on a regular (day), you get weird looks and here you look amazing."

Sunday's event on South Elm Street ran from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and featured numerous food trucks, merchandise vendors and opportunities for entertainment.

One of the events Sunday offered attendees the chance to do a meet and greet with two groups of drag queens, the Headliners (Plane Jane, Jessica Wild and Luxx Noir London) and the Legends of Drag (Dana St. James, Ebony Addams, Kirby Kolby and Paisley Parque).

A GSO Pride King and Queen were also crowned.

The 2023 Greensboro Pride Festival drew in approximately 50,000 visitors to the downtown area. We are still waiting for attendance numbers from this year's event, but thousands were expected to attend.

Alternative Resources of the Triad has hosted Greensboro Pride Week every year since 2006, originally calling it Triad Pride.

ART was created in 1988 with the goal "to create a place as to where LGBTQ+ people of the Triad have access to friendly doctors, lawyers, dentists and whatever they needed," ART Board Chair Brian Coleman told WFMY News 2 last year.
