3 firefighters released from hospital after crash while responding to a call

Fire Chief Jason Myers said the firefighters are sore but plan to return to work Tuesday.

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — As of Monday, all firefighters and the other driver involved have been released from the hospital.

On Sunday, Dec. 17, the Thomasville Police Department said a fire crew was responding to a crash when an SUV hit their fire truck.

Fire Chief Jason Myers said the firefighters are sore but plan to return to work Tuesday.

As far as the truck is concerned, Chief Myers said the 2004 fire truck was slated to be replaced soon. An adjuster is examining the damage to see if it is repairable or totaled. The replacement truck has been delayed due to supply chain issues.

Police said the fire truck had its lights and siren on and slowed down as it approached the intersection of Baptist Children's Home Road and West Holly Hill Road Extension. An SUV entered the intersection with a green light and hit the fire truck. The fire truck overturned on Lake Road near I-85.

People who saw the crash said they were shocked when it happened.

"I’ve never seen a truck flip over. That was a one time experience for sure,” Averianna Barnes said.

EMS took the driver of the car and one of the firefighters to Thomasville Medical Center for minor injuries. The other two firefighters were taken to the hospital by fire department personnel as a precaution.

"We are thankful for that, that the injuries were minor enough so they can return to duty. We are going to be checking on them to make sure of that, and also just checking on how they are doing mentally, not just physically. Anybody who goes through a traffic accident like that, they are going to have moments where they relive it, and we just wanna make sure they are good mentally where they can provide, and do their job at 100%,” Chief Myers said.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the car involved at this time.

Emergency crews responded to the initial accident, where one patient was taken to an area hospital.
