THOMASVILLE, N.C. — A Thomasville teenager has died after a single-car crash on Friday, May 24, according to the Thomasville Police Department.
The crash happened just after school let out Friday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. taking the life of 14-year-old Fernanda Trigueros Lopez.
We are told she was in the car with her brother and mother at the time of the crash.
WFMY spoke briefly to the father of the teen. He said his daughter was a very kind-hearted girl who always had a smile on her face.
Trigueros Lopez's father said she was always happy, loved everyone, and she will forever be in their hearts.
A 21-year-old man was driving east on Hasty School Road in a minivan Friday.
Police said he crossed the double yellow centerline, veered off the road to the left and hit two trees in the front yard of a home.
The 21-year-old driver was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
A 45-year-old passenger was treated on scene by EMS for minor injuries.
Tragically, Fernanda Trigueros Lopez, 14, died from her injuries.
Thomasville police spoke to the impact an incident like this can have on a city.
Detective Jacob Banker said, “we are a tightknit community. We are still a small community compared to the rest in the area so we know the people on more of a close basis, and without going into specifics, this one hits Thomasville a little bit more than some, and we are definitely thinking about the family.”
We learned the teen went to Ledford Middle School.
A teacher I spoke with online is asking for prayers as the community, and family try to cope with this tragic death.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident but say Trigueros Lopez wasn't wearing seatbelt.
The Davidson County School district left a statement regarding Trigueros' death:
Our thoughts are with Fernanda's family and friends as they navigate this incredibly unimaginable tragedy. Ledford Middle School staff members have done an outstanding job providing support for the student body. We had a large team of support staff at Ledford Middle yesterday. We know losing a classmate is extremely difficult for adolescents, so additional personnel will continue to be available as needed.
