GREENSBORO, N.C. — If you saw my cute ladybug garden rock in my yard, you'd know what it was, right? Sure it's decorative, but nine times out of ten things that size are a hide-a-key. You know it, I know it and the burglars know it.
"Easy to hide places for your keys, you may think hiding under your doormat or flower pot is a good hiding spot, but burglars know where to look," said Kristi O'Connor of CPI Security.
When I showed her my decor she told me, 'Maybe that's a better paperweight than a hide a key'.
Most of us think of a burglar getting in with a tool like a crowbar or brute force to kick a door in, but really...
"One of the easiest ways burglars break in is from unlocked doors and windows. It seems silly to have to say this, but people leave their doors unlocked, they leave their cars unlocked. You've got to lock your doors," said O'Connor.
If you have a safe in your house, the one place you don't want it to be is the primary bedroom.
"That's the place burglars are going to go to first and make sure you bolt it to the ground we've seen brazen robbers leave the house with them, " said O'Connor.
A lot of us have alarm systems, but O'Conner says we forget to arm them when we're running errands or are gone for a long weekend. She says just like locking the doors, get in the habit of using the alarm, it's the best way to get the police to your house quickly.
