GREENSBORO, N.C. — Whether you're doing Dry January or you want to have a few non-alcoholic selections on hand for your holiday parties, Consumer Reports did a blind taste test to find out which non-alcoholic sparkling wines are worth serving. There were twelve staffers to do a blind taste test.
"They tested eight de-alcoholized sparkling wines, which are made the same way as wine, but the alcohol is removed at the end; and two sparkling wine alternatives, which are blends of ingredients, like tea, herbs, and fruit," said Trisha Calvo of Consumer Reports.
The taste testers evaluated each beverage for flavor, bubbliness, and if they would buy it for themselves.
Here at the top picks:
#1 Vinada Tinteling Tempranillo Rosé. This $15 bottle was the all-around favorite. Testers found it to be refreshing and sweet, but not too sweet.
#2 Sutter Home's Free Alcohol-Removed Wine, Sparkling Brut. This bottle sells for just under $20 was the runner-up and is good for fans of sweeter wines.
#3 Rondel Zero De-Alcoholized Sparkling Wine. This was the budget pick at $11 a bottle. Tasters said it was a good pick when throwing a party.
"Don't expect the non-alcoholic versions to taste the same as their counterparts, but they are getting quite close," said Calvo.
