The Beach is Back: Drastic Erosion at Outer Banks Appears to be Gone

The beach in Nags Head appears to be restored, according to photos from the scene.

NAGS HEAD, NC (WNCN) - About two weeks ago, visitors along the Outer Banks of North Carolina were stunned to see drastic erosion in Nags Head.

Images from the area of the north side of Jeanette's Pier showed about a 10-foot drop-off and a thin strip of beach.

Locals said the sandy part of the beach was usually at least two or three times wider before the dramatic erosion.

But now, the beach appears to be restored, according to photos from the scene.

Wes Snyder, who is a photographer at the Outer Banks, posted video of the area Sunday.

"The previous eroded cliffs near Jennette’s Pier are gone and the beach is beginning to look normal again," Snyder wrote on Facebook.

So how did the face of the beach change so dramatically in such a short period of time?

Experts with the Town of Nags Head say wind is to blame. They say extended periods of North and Northeast winds can cause the erosion, which was seen earlier.

During the dramatic erosion, many people posted on Facebook that the images were not fake.

"We were like 'OK this can not be true. That's crazy.' So we decided, 'Hey let's go on our lunch break,' and so what better thing to do on your lunch break than to come and see something like this?" said Outer Banks resident Martha Keener.

"At first we did think that's a made up picture, but it's really not," said fellow OBX resident Toni Midgett, about a picture circulating online.
