WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Update: As of Nov. 27, the student remains in critical condition, according to Winston-Salem police.

A high school student was critically injured after allegedly jumping out of the back door of a school bus on Nov. 20 around 5:30 p.m., according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Police said they found a teenager who was later identified to be a Parkland High School student.

According to police, the student was riding on the school bus and jumped out of the back of the bus while it was still moving.

The teen sustained significant injuries from the jump, police said. The student was taken to a hospital and is being treated for critical injuries.

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools released a statement regarding the incident.

“This is a heartbreaking situation,” said WS/FCS Superintendent Tricia McManus. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our student and the family. School administrators are supporting the family in every way possible. Our crisis team has been available on campus today to talk with the student’s peers and all those impacted by what happened yesterday. We know this event has been traumatizing for the student, the family, for the students on board the bus, and for the bus driver.”

The school system said they are working with the Winston-Salem Police Department and the transportation team.
