WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — What can you eat for $5? Chances are you could get a run-of-the-mill fast food burger and fries, but maybe not a drink.
So, why not put that $5 toward home cooking that you don't have to make or clean up? The Beat Chef Shane Chili Edition is on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from 1 pm until 4 pm at the Foothills Brewing Tasting Room (3800 Kimwell Dr, Winston-Salem, NC 27103)
Here's how it works, Chef Shane will make four different kinds of chilis and go up against the entries of the home cooks to see who makes each kind of chili best. There are 26 entries, so there will be a lot of eating! The four chili categories are pub chili, Texas chili, white chili, and vegetarian chili.
"Everyone gets a wristband. Typically people pick where they want to start and go around and we'll have QR codes on each table so you can vote for your favorite chili," said Jade Moore, Foothills Brewing Tasting Room Manager.
Along with a People's Choice award, Foothills also has four guest judges who will be voting on best in show as well.
"There are some chili purists out there who are very adamant about the way this chili should be judged. So we are going to go off of aroma, consistency, taste, and even aftertaste," said Moore.
Last year, a guest chili won the event. So, what will happen this year?
"Bring it on," said Chef Shane.
This is the second year of the chili event. With the cool temps and rain, the event will be held inside the Tasting Room. Of course, there will be plenty of Foothills Brewing beer that you can buy to pair with your chili.
"I think there's an emotional tie to chili because we remember our grandmother made it and used a specific kind of bean or recipe," said Chef Shane.
