GREENSBORO, N.C. — Students and faculty said goodbye to a historic Greensboro school on Saturday, April 27.
Swann Middle School is closing at the end of the year.
The school held a Victory Lap homecoming event so alumni and current students could share memories
Monica Rogers is the longest-serving teacher at the school.
She said it's hard to see the school change after her 21 years of working there.
"Right now I feel hurt, so I pray I don't get emotional but, I really have loved this school. to see people I taught that are adults, in their late 20s, to now see kids that will be with me for the last time, oh it hurts, it's emotional," said Rogers.
A student said he'll miss the school.
"It feels good and bad at the same time because you're the last group you have the most stuff we're the first ones having homecoming here, we had a pep rally yesterday, that was very fun, and it also pretty sad to feel like a school for more than 100 years is getting shut down and I have to be the last to be able to go here."
Swann Middle will undergo renovations before transitioning to a performing arts school.
In the meantime, Swann Middle School students will go to either Kiser or Mendenhall Middle Schools while a new school is being built for them. Hairston Middle is also an option. Swann students in the school's technology choice program will attend Hairston's new Innovative Sciences program.
