Hot and dry weather on the way to the Piedmont

It may only be April, but a big warm-up is on the way. Not much rain either.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's comfy now, but summer heat is making an early appearance in the Carolinas heading into next week! The WFMY News 2 Weather team is tracking the weather pattern coming into view.

How warm will it get?

Temperatures will be right around average to finish out this week and stat the upcoming weekend. Remember, for late April that means in the 70 degree range or so.

Once Sunday rolls around, we're predicting a shift in the jet stream far to our north. We call this a "ridge" and it usually allows warmer air from the south to flow in freely to our area. It's a warm-up pattern. Not only that, but we will also see high pressure setting up strongly over the Atlantic Ocean to our southern. This will be another force to drive in some warmer winds to our area for early next week.

Temperatures will reach right around 80 degrees by Sunday. For Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we are currently forecasting temperatures in the mid 80s with a bit of humidity. This is above average for April, although certainly not unheard of.

Bottom line, this will make it feel a bit more like summer rather than spring for a few days.

Early summer heat is heading toward the Piedmont early next week.

Drought possible?

This weather pattern will allow us to stay dry for a while, maybe a bit too long too. Right now, we're in a little bit of a rainfall deficit over the last 90 days.

Going through the next 7 days we aren't expecting any significant rain. With temperatures warming and days getting longer, this will lead to our soil drying out pretty quickly.

While we aren't in danger of a significant drought anytime soon, a "flash drought" may develop if the dry weather continues. This makes it tough for gardeners and farmers trying to get crops started before the summer arrives.
