YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. — A student who was found with a loaded gun at Starmount High School in Yadkin County Friday has been detained, according to the sheriff's office.
Yadkin County Schools received an anonymous tip through the "Say Something App" that a student had brought a weapon to school. The tip was relayed to the sheriff's office and the deputy assigned as the School Resource Officer (SRO) at Starmount High School.
The SRO and another deputy immediately found the student with the gun.
The gun was seized and the student was detained, searched, and questioned, according to the sheriff's office.
No students, faculty, or staff were injured during the incident.
Yadkin County Superintendent Dr. Todd Martin sent the following message to parents:
Earlier this morning, school administrators at Starmount High School received information through the "Say Something" anonymous reporting app concerning a student with a weapon on campus. School administrators immediately notified law enforcement. The Yadkin County Sheriff's Department assisted staff by adding additional officers at the school while the student was detained, searched, and questioned. During the search, deputies located a loaded handgun on the student and were able to obtain the weapon from the student peacefully. The student was placed in custody of the Sheriff's Department.
Incidents like this are always concerning, and I felt you needed to know about it. I want to commend the quick actions of the Starmount High School administrators and the Yadkin County Sheriff's Department. They worked together to ensure that this situation was brought to a timely and safe end.
This investigation is ongoing.
