Storm damage & insurance: The three steps you should do immediately

Right now, before the storm comes, put your insurance agent's info in your phone contacts.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — What do you do if a tree damages your house or if wind damage causes damage to your roof and now the water is on the inside?

The first thing you should do is what comes naturally, and that's grabbing your phone.

"First record and document the damage. We have these amazing things in our hands every day that that are cell phones that can take pictures, take notes, can record your voice. So you've got a great tool to document the damage," said Christopher Cook of Alliance Insurance Services.

Recording the damage helps you document the situation so your insurance company can see the time, the date, and the scope of what happened

Next, you want to prevent further damage so do what you need to whether that's a tarp, cleaning things up or out.

And last, you need to report it to your insurance company and make a claim.

"Let's get this thing reported as quickly as we can so that an adjuster can come visit you or, or you can work with an adjuster," said Cook.

Cook would add, never put yourself in danger to get video or pictures, use your best judgment.

While the storm is still out for a few hours, do yourself a favor and put your insurance agent's information into your phone contacts. You need their name, email address, and phone number, and don't forget your policy number.
